Packing Essentials
Before you embark on your hiking trip, it is essential to have the right gear and equipment. Here are some of the packing essentials that we recommend if don’t have any plans on sleeping in a tent or cooking your meals in the bush:
Clothing
Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support
3 Pairs of hiking socks ( 2 thin, 1 medium thick, merino wool)
3 Sets of underwear
Quick-drying hiking trousers
2 Moisture-wicking t-shirts or long-sleeve shirts
Windproof fleece or down jacket
Waterproof rain jacket
Sun hat and beanie for cold weather
Mosquito net clothing – there are many versions with a hat with a net being your first choice
A pair of gloves
Light comfortable shoes or slippers to wear in the evening after the hike
Gear and Equipment
Waterproof backpack with a rain cover
Trekking poles
Water bottles or hydration system
Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
Sunglasses with UV protection
Toiletries – toothbrush, toothpaste tablets, soap/schampoo bar, medication, insect repellent & sun screen
Microfiber towel
Personal first aid kit
Personal mosquito repeller (not to be used inside your tent)
Repair kit with gaffer tape, a few zip ties, a pair of laces, Multitool (swiss knife)
Map and compass or GPS device
Phone & charger
A 5,000 mAh (minimum) powerbank if you intend to use the phone as a guide
Clothing line
Food and Snacks
High-energy snacks such as nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars Instant noodles or soup
Tea bags or instant coffee
Preparing for Your Hike
It is essential to prepare your body and mind before embarking on your hiking journey. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Physical Preparation
Start a training program that includes cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching. Build up your endurance by going on regular hikes and gradually increasing the distance and elevation gain.
Get plenty of rest and sleep to allow your body to recover.
Mental Preparation
Set realistic expectations and goals for your hike. Visualize yourself completing the hike successfully. Focus on the present moment and enjoy the journey.
